1000 paper cranes

{image from wikipedia}

as i'm on a journey of sorts in my life right now, one of the things i hope to accomplish this year is to fold 1,000 paper cranes.   in japan, the crane is seen as a mythical being, with a life span of 1,000 years.   it's said that if you fold one crane for every year of the life-span, you will be granted a wish.   at shrines you can see strings of these dreams and wishes, hanging exposed to the open air - their inevitable disintegration is thought to release the wish and bring it to pass.  i think it's a lovely sentiment, and also gorgeous from an artistic point of view...  i'm hoping to use some pretty scrapbook paper for mine, as well as some solid colors.
